A new blog post on our N64 demo: https://30fps.net/pages/palette-lighting-tricks-n64/

It explains the normal mapping technique and how baked lighting was stored and composited at runtime. Also reveals what a hack the specular effects were!

Birdhouse in Your [Redacted]

The whole experience of the fedi is just yelling "hey nerds, I found something interesting..." into the abyss and the abyss going "fuck me, that is interesting"

I feel a little bit foolish, I run a solar powered server which provides a instance, a client and a server. During the winter it's only online for fairly short periods of time depending on the sun.
Ive got some markdown files on the gitea server which I edit using the website, I therefore have to wait for the sunshine before i can do this, it can be a little annoying if the timing doesn't line up with my day schedule.

I have only just clicked that it's so I can clone to my laptop, edit to my hearts content and then push it back when the server is online. Honestly completely forgot this key function. Git (or other similar systems) are ideal for a approach, the server doesn't need to be online all day as it's not actually doing much in between, I can work separately. I wonder if this model could be applied to our parts of our day to day work

May I present my new four-part article series “Demystifying the PVS” on Quake's precomputed visibility.

The first three parts are out now!

Huh, TIL. The "transform normals with inverse transpose matrix" is not ideal, turns out. Adjugate matrix is both better and faster to calculate. See https://github.com/graphitemaster/normals_revisited and shadertoy by iq himself: https://www.shadertoy.com/view/3s33zj

Mastodon isn't perfect.

But the fact a social network exists that is completely free to use,

has no venture capital investors,

has no shareholders to answer to,

has no growth targets,

with a web interface with zero cookies,

and mobile apps with zero trackers at all

with ten thousand server administrators who donate their time for user safety

is - in my opinion - mindbogglingly cool, given the state of the world we live in. Not everything has to be shit. People make things better.

One gripe I’ve had since returning to Android is that I haven’t found a nice feeling fedi client. I think that’s resolved now though, Moshidon feels pretty good, and at last, is a client that tells me straight when my instance is down!

Oh and… Just one more thing.

You claim that the system is… Serverless, I believe? Well, I’m no computer whizzkid, so I had the boys back at the lab do some digging.

They had a little look and, well… They found some servers. Isn’t that interesting?

Well, I best be on my way now.

Increasing work_mem and maintenance_work_mem to be ~double of what it was seems to have solved my akkoma time-outing issues. Who knew a database-bound service might benefit from more resources! Still, might set up a gotosocial, seems pretty lean. And it'd finally be a fedi server written in a lang I know at all.

The Linux Wayland Experience™️ (at least on Sway) has gotten very good! I just crashed my GPU driver with some WebGL in Firefox (everything froze for a while), and it recovered! Screen went black, and then everything came back just fine. Well, the webgl app died due to losing its webgl context, but that's very fair.

But if the rubber ducks can find the problems in the code by themselves then why do we need to pay the programmers

Wrote a longer blogpost about moving my game project from C to Odin programming language:
https://akselmo.dev/posts/moving-from-c-to-odin/

It's rambly as always, and barely checked for typos or other inconsistencies. But I hope it's interesting anyway.

"Tweet" as a generic term for a post on a microblogging platform is an interesting take, especially now that it actually isn't used by the company that used to "own" the term. Hmm. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NyV54qfSZwg
