@kaiyou I've spent some time thinking about where it would even be safe to keep hardware this hot, haven't come up with a good solution yet.

But admittedly a cardboard box is, uh, not safe.

@CyReVolt Seems like a cool project! Though this cardboard box is less a micro datacenter, more a pile of Raspberry Pis bought on a whim because I don't want to pay rent for VPSes blobcat_peek

@_roko Ah, yeah. I am currently running on full manual, no docker, kubernetes or ansible.

@samgai The switch is plugged in and powers 3 Pis with PoE. One of the Pis is a 2B+ which doesn't have PoE, so it has its own power cable.

@CyReVolt @neon that's some authentic homebrew self hosting, put some stuff in a cardboard box and boom! servers deployed

@frox @CyReVolt @neon For proper cooling it needs to be refrigerated.

@alsternerd That one is better sized than mine I think, unfortunately I only have these big boxes from my move a few months ago.

@neon How nice, a Pi box 😁

@neon @kaiyou
Why not sticking some old heatsinks to anything you can?

@dracoMetallium @kaiyou It's a bit hard to stick a heatsink in the <1cm of empty space above the Pis. Except for the top one, I guess.

Nothing here actually gets *that* hot, I imagine the real hazard is just having cables and electrical equipment inside a relatively flammable box.

@neon Ain't you afraid of the dust settling on the RPis ? I mean I am so I made a very ugly box out of wood but I'm still wondering if I need it or not.

@Meandres Not really, my desktop gathers dust too, even though it's in a box. Up to this point I've just kept my Pis on either my desktop or floor.

@neon one tin whisker / spark and that whole thing goes up in flames

@jeffcliff I doubt that would ignite the cardboard, but to clarify, I'm not going to keep this setup, current plan is to put the stuff in a mini-ITX computer case. But it did make for a fun meme.

@Voice Problems? I've gotten days worth of fun out of these raspberries.

@neon a lot of them. Mostly sudden freeze or disk storage failures.

@Voice Haven’t gotten any so far, started in 2017.

Admittedly I’m tempting fate by only having manual backups, still working procrastinating on automatic ones.

@neon I think you need to rack mount those...

@neon If you cut 40x 5mm holes into the sides, just above the base it would improve convective cooling. (Use rrdtool to graph `printf "%.2f" $(echo "$(cat /sys/class/thermal/thermal_zone0/temp)/1000"|bc -l)` before you make the upgrade, so you can see the improvement.)

@isobel I already switched to a real computer case, with a 140mm fan, dropped temps from 80 C to <60C!
