Is vibecoded but freely licensed software really free software, if it's unmaintainable and unreadable, as these tend to be? It's missing freedom #1, just from a more "practically possible" rather than "legally allowed" standpoint.

@neon The maintenance angle really worries me, and causes me to nope out when I find a vibe-coded project. If you don’t know how to maintain and develop your own software, it’s not going to live very long as a project.

@deadsuperhero @neon I think you’re quite wrong about that. Nobody knows how to maintain a project. LLM assistance makes the programming part cheap. so among fully vibed projects, there’ll be competition for being the best maintained.

@lain @neon Maybe I am wrong, time will tell. But, I’ll make the statement that those who understand programming principles are going to have a better time maintaining their code compared to those who don’t.

Trying to fix bugs or performance issues seems like it would be a lot more complicated if you can’t understand what’s happening under the hood.

Vibe-coded software is valueless. The value of software lies in the expertise, commitment, and unique creative expression behind it on the part of human authors. Without expertise, commitment, and unique expression, the software is worth nothing from the moment it has been extruded out.

my point is that you cannot accurately evaluate how well a project is maintained without investing a lot of time and knowing a lot things.

nobody is choosing based off of community vibes or responsiveness to PRs.

the current state is one where we can only assume anything written will be completely unmaintained and it will be up to you to fix any known issues (lol if its a security issue and you are not an expert).

you are right that making things is the easy part, and maintaining them is the effortful part, but there is no incentive to build a reputation anymore because the whole FOSS paradigm is fucking broken and for suckers.
