Anyone know if there are safety concerns regarding keeping servers (like, a regular desktop PC without a monitor) on a windowed balcony — i.e. temperature-wise outside, but safe from the elements? #selfhosting

Would save some square meters from inside the apartment, and have just a little less fan/hdd noise around…

@neon electronics generally love lower temperatures, so below zero should be no problem at all (afaik).

very hot summers should be doable if you have proper cpu and case fans & applied thermal paste on the cpu properly.

what I always do with new computers is run a prime95 stresstest, and some util to display cpu/gpu temps, and see if it stays below whatever the internet says should be the max temperature for that specific processor.

if that's the case with some margin, then it should do fine on a hot summer day outside :)

@bazkie Sounds good! The temps have been quite cool (50–60 °C) inside the apartment (around 24 °C usually), so I don’t think even the hottest day Finland can muster would be too bad.

From what I’ve asked around, seems like humidity is a common concern too, so I suppose I’ll keep an eye on that, but it’s seeming pretty promising so far.
